The Group's drivers

The need to:

  • protect the health and safety of everyone working on or near underground assets;
  • protect the helth and safety of members of the public living and working adjacent to works on underground assets;
  • ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of works on underground assets, to minimise associated direct, damage and societal costs;
  • support the successful delivery of relevant Traffic Management Act and other appropriate legislative targets, and
  • positively influence public opinion of everyone involved in the provision and maintenance of underground assets.

Aims of the Group

  1. To act as an independent point of focus and single voice for everyone involved with underground assets.
  2. To deliver agreed data definitions, data standards, protocols and processes, and a timetable for their implementation, leading to the most effective and efficient means of recording, storing, sharing and displaying information on underground assets, and appropriate associated above ground assets.
  3. To ensure that everything is in place to enable the successful delivery of the NUAG Vision.
  4. To inform and represent the wider stakeholder community.

NUAG's desired outcomes

The achievement of NUAG's Aims will contribute to the delivery of:

  • reduced congestion;
  • reduced direct, third party damage and societal costs;
  • reduced airborne and noise pollution;
  • more sustainable construction;
  • reduced information management costs;
  • improved relations with regulators;
  • more economic maintenance;
  • public confidence in a more effective street works process;
  • improved health and safety;
  • improved image of organisations, and
  • proven methods and technologies to exploit in home and overseas markets

to all stakeholders, including utilities, highways organisations, the UK Government, the environment and society in general.

Objectives

  1. To ensure effective management processes are in place to deliver NUAG's Aims.
  2. To set up and manage appropriate and necessary working groups as and when required.
  3. To liaise effectively with all stakeholders, including appropriate Government departments, utility, highways and contractor groups, and other representative bodies to ensure that NUAG's Terms of Reference and Strategy reflect current needs.
  4. To develop and promote processes and standards for capturing, recording, storing and sharing buried asset information that reflect stakeholder requirements.
  5. To define the technological capability needed to deliver the NUAG Vision, based on the processes and standards described in (4).
  6. To ensure sustainable delivery of the NUAG Vision.
  7. To engage effectively, and influence appropriately, all stakeholders, including appropriate Government departments, utility, highways and contractor groups, and other representative bodies.
